Welcome to the official website of the
Intermountain Regional EMS for Children Coordinating Council
Background
Children in the intermountain west are at greater risk of premature
death and disability from injury compared to the nation as a whole.
Limited health care resources and the rural nature of the region may
contribute to these higher rates of death.
Recognizing
the need for a focused approach, the Intermountain Regional Emergency
Medical Services for Children Coordinating Council, Inc. (IRECC) was
formed in 1992 as an alliance of eight states conducting EMSC
activities. IRECC is now a
501(c)3 non-profit corporation with elected officials, formalized
bylaws, and fiscal responsibility dedicated to supporting an interstate
approach to data collection, collaboration, and interventions. The
organization currently operates under a regional continuing education grant from the Maternal
and Child Health Bureau and other revenue sources.
Cooperation
and Collaboration
The eight states have established strong interstate and regional
collaboration. Many IRECC activities have focused on training for
prehospital and hospital personnel. A standard curriculum has evolved
and been improved upon as it has passed from one state to the next. The
IRECC states have shared training personnel and technology across their
boundaries. Cooperative ventures with
universities, the IHS tribal EMS
agencies and other pediatric focused organizations have resulted in
research into preventable trauma deaths; the development of specialty
training and resources for children who are technologically dependent;
and comparisons of traditional and non-traditional training delivery
methods. |
